Ed, can you not receive the BBC by satellite dish in your part of the world ?
And as far as DVD compatability goes, it is relatively easy in the UK to have a DVD player unlocked so that it can readily read both R1 and R2 formats - so allowing it to play DVDs originating either in Europe or North America. Given that most DVD players probably originate in the Far East (or is that the Far West from your perspective ?) the same thing ought to apply to those purchased in the USA - if you can find someone who knows how to unlock them.
