Slight deviation here, but it's true that some Americans are woefully ignorant of what's going on in other countries. Last summer I took a driving trip through the western states. Near Crater Lake in Oregon roadwork was going on and I had to wait about 20 minutes. I started talking to the flag girl, and after a while she glanced at my license plate and said, "Britsh Columbia? Where's that at?" B.C. is about one day's drive north of where we were standing. Getting back to Ransome, I lent my copy of SA to a Canadain friend, a highly literary type. He gave it back a few days later withe the comment, "It's just about kids camping on an island, isn't it?" He paused. "Maybe if I had grown up with those stories the way you did, I might have liked it." I wonder if you get a similar reaction from adults in the U.K. nowadays. Perhaps the difference is that most of us in this chat room have loved the books since childhood. I also agree that camping on an island must seem pretty small potatoes to a generation brought up on Harry Potter and video games. I recently had four young men from Brighton staying in my house on their way around the world. They were all connected to their laptops and when they weren't skiing at Whistler spent nearly all their time playing computer games. One of them had brought a book to read, however. None of them had heard of the Arthur Ransome series. Sigh!
