I agree with your observations. AR's adventures occur in a realistic environment, and most of the adventures simply involve imagination and play. The Five have but to trip over a stone and a secret passage (with treasure!) is quickly revealed - after the first couple of books, it gets a bit tedious.
If you prefer the "real" style, be sure to find the three "Oxus" books by Hull & Whitlock. As I have grown older, I have found myself re-reading them more frequently than AR's.
