To digress briefly, I want to mention a disputed grammatical point about the alleged subject in the passive voice. A couple of people I know who were taught their grammar in the U.K. assure me that a sentence such as "The flowers should be watered" has no subject. Since it has no subject, it is passive voice. On this side of the Atlantic, however, grammarians would insist that since the subject is understood, (you) the sentence is in the active voice. "Flowers" is, of course, the object. Comments?
