Newcomers to the tribe learn English with varying degrees of difficulty. Nearly all my students were Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and so I was aware of their linguistic problems. Nevertheless, I was amazed at how fast and how accurately some of them learned the language. Although I must admit I have never been able to explain satisfactorily why "Would you please to wait?" is not acceptable, when other uses of the infinitive are.

The passive voice should seldom be used.
Remember to never split an infinitive
A preposition should not be used to end a sentence with.
Etc. Etc. Etc.
