If we can postulate microbes with consciousness, we can also postulate microbes with the power to turn supernova on and off. But the limits to the possible powers of microbes are irrelevant to the underlying logic. They are also a long way away from the interests of most TarBoarders - we seem to be the only ones left on this thread! I know it's going to be a big jump, but lets get wind this back to Ransome.

When Ransome was working as the Manchester Guardian's correspondent in Russia he may have felt a split of loyalties* between his admiration for the workers of Russia and his patriotism to Britain. If so, did this effect his reporting? Did this effect how people perceived the early revolution? How did this affect British policy towards the new state? This is the sort of stuff that I think of when I think about a critical problem that is caused by consciousness and then how it has affected the world.

On the other hand when William starts having philosophical thoughts in CC I have a different problem. This anthropomorphic pug is causing a serious stretch to my 'suspension of disbelief'. That is an example of the 'problem of consciousness'.
