Meta fuel; not jelly-like when I encountered it, but white solid. Metaldehyde. Just as well Roger didn't eat it, as it's jolly poisonous. When I was young, we used to use it for all kinds of things, like recycling lead soldiers by melting them into a Horlicks tin. It was also the staple fuel for small model steam engine boilers, and those 'jet boats' that would putt-putt across the bath.
