I think British English has a stronger habit of using brand names as generic names than North American English. You don't vacuum, you "Hoover", for example, so its hard to be dogmatic that Ransome is using a brand name rather than a branded generic name, if you see what I mean.

I think that Garibaldi is not a brand name as such, but is a generic name, like Bourbon or digestive biscuit. On the other hand I think of "golden syrup" as a brand name of Tate and Lyle's product, though apparently it can be generic. Here is a picture of the familiar green tin with its picture of Samson's lion and the quote "Out of the strong comes forth sweetness"
