the name "Methylated Spirits came from the early version which was ethanol (the alcohol in alcoholic drinks) mixed with some methanol ("wood alcohol") which has nasty effects on the drinker, such as permanent blindness etc.
These days there is no methanol in methylated spirits. Instead various unpleasant flavourings are added to the ethanol to deter drinkers, without putting the determined ones in dire straits.
