My understanding is that they add something horrible to meths to stop you drinking it.

They certainly add nastifier to Meths in Britain, but for instance in Switzerland they don't. There, if you buy 'burning alcohol', which is the equivalent, it smells wonderful, full of fruity goodness. I have no idea whether or not it is actually methylated, or whether it's just ethyl alcohol, but perhaps distilled under less stringent conditions. It might be significant that in Switzerland there is little or no tax on distilled alcoholic drinks, and individuals are allowed to make their own hooch, although the actual distillation has to be carried out at a government approved place, because of the danger of contaminating the ethyl with methyl, by distilling at the wrong temperature.

In Britain, for a long time, there has been a very high tax on distilled alcoholic drink. I suspect that this was the original reason for the methylation (which made it poisonous) and now the nasty taste. Not safety; finance.
