In the Royal Navy, into at least the 1950s the ratings ate dinner and the officers ate lunch!
At a state-run primary school in the Harrow area in the 1950's our midday meal was paid for
with dinner money and supervised by dinner ladies. (So, I conclude that this meal must have
been 'dinner'.) I then went to a minor public school in West London which had a lunch break.
