While the ending of free school milk was (and still remains) a powerful symbol,
its demise was just a landmark of a deeper change in the UK. Something strange
started to happen in the UK in the 1960's. It affected not only the nutritional value
of school meals, the services provided by railways and hospitals, but also the whole
relationship between citizens and the state. Managers, consultants and bureaucracy
blossomed, and good service was replaced by spin.

A cup of Bournvita is very civilised ending to the day, when the kids are safely
tucked up in bed, and supper (or dinner has long been and gone). I remember this
being served with oatmeal biscuits and a homemade ham and onion pate. (Alas,
I don't have the recipe.)

But what is this meal, usually served around 11pm, called?
