As for the S & As, I think it surprising that they cook dinner at
midday, it might be thought more convenient for explorers to eat at the
end of the day's explorations, as AR's catalogue of missed or concertinaed
meals suggests. Perhaps this shows that ideas of how things should be done
'properly' linger on after convenience has adapted habits.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of this before. I'm sure that, as an experienced
sailor, AR was well aware of the morale boosting and nutritional value
of a hot meal in the middle of the day, particularly if you are spending
a great deal of time in the open air. In Racundra's First Cruise, 'Cook'
is always lashing up hot drinks in the middle of the fiercest storms.

On my various boating adventures, where navigation was restricted to
daylight, I used to 'crack on' and try to cover as much mileage as possible
before dusk. With the benefit of hindsight, this wasn't such a good idea.
Cooking (and washing up) in the dark wasn't much fun and we would
often give up the idea of preparing a meal ourselves and slope off
to the nearest pub.

Come to think of it, the original Jock always used to feed his crew in
the middle of the day. For those planning their own voyages, this
instructional video (click link below) provides a warning of can happen
if you don't look after your crew properly.
