In the new Mixed Moss, there is a piece called "Natives, Cash and Class" which comes out with all the usual old stuff about the social class of AR's characters and which has been discussed many times on TarBoard. However, the author has a new slant on Mrs Tyson - he claims that when the children moved camp to High Topps, Mrs T's concern about fire "must have been mingled with disappointment at losing the chance to bill their mother for meals while they camped in the orchard".

To my mind, this is pure tosh. Despite this, I am grateful to the author of the article for introducing an element (however small) of controversy into the all-pervading blokeish bonhomie that surrounds AR discussions these days, and which is why I raise it here.
