Oh no, Peter, don't get me wrong. I agree with you. That's why I said that AR was well aware of the differences in class, and wasn't particularly bothered by them. I didn't mean there was prejudice in AR's books. What I meant was that I sensed a familiar uncomfortable stirring among the contriubuters to this site when we began to approach the subject. My difficulty comes from a certain puzzlement I feel why we should be sensitive about the fact that accent frequently defines class. Incidentally, I should have said class discrimination rather than class prejudice. I think if Radio 5 receives a host of complaints if a guest has a posh accent jaw-dropping. To understand this, I realize, one has to dig a lot deeper than most people are prepared to go on this website. I speak with a Canadian accent with overtones of southern English, but have no objection to other people, even Canadians, speking differently. I just find some of their accents amusing, but I certainly do not criticize them or think them inferior in any way.
