I always figured they really knew their children, and had assumed an attitude Nancy put forward earlier in the series: "What the eye doesn't see the heart can't grieve." I learned the usefulness of that approach as my four children started their combined 13 years of being teenagers. It was a lot less worrisome for me and much more beneficial to my children if I "did not know" what they were up to on occasion. And undoubtedly a lot more fun for them!
