I love Secret Water.

The menace of nature - mud and tides - is intertwined with
the menace of the unknown human enemy. All of John's
newly tested skills as captain when he sailed the Goblin
to Holland prove totally inadequate against the treachery of
the Red Sea when Titty and Bridget are nearly drowned, or
the cunning of the Eels who capture Bridget from his camp.

The Mastadon's dilemma - a friend to Eels and explorers -
is one of the most philosophically challenging problems in
the whole series.

The polite meal with the missionaries, no doubt with pork
pies a plenty and loads of ginger beer, helps to frame the
danger and savagery lurking beneath the surface. If word of
what really happened leaked out, the Swallows and Eels
might have been grounded for good.
