I would have thought RA's relationship with these "friendly natives" is amply demonstrated (and underlined) by his 'real life' involvement with the Charcoal Burners (witness his picking up the clay pipes they left for him at the Red Lion at Lowick) and the inclusion of the Billies in the books.
