Yes, the whole rabbit subplot is wonderful! Starting with my personal concerns that the rabbit would spoil without refrigeration- clearly the Lakes, even in summer, is cooler than Southern California.
Dick and Dorothea's concerns- how to cook it, when to cook it, and Dick's discovery of the 'scientific way' to skin and clean the rabbit- these are all just wonderful. . Dick is able, despite his turning green, to finish a pretty disgusting task. Dorothea prepares the rabbit successfully, something we learn from Nancy that 'even Susan' hasn't done. The details really add to the idea that started in WH of the town children learning to explore the wilderness, becoming competent at the independent arts needing for camping and surviving in the country.
