But I ask myself how realistic is it that the Coots - growing up in a world of boats rather than books - would have been into piracy in the first place, let alone moving on to nature conservancy?

I always felt it was perfectly natural and in character; when they were very young, piracy would have been a natural fantasy game, and as they grew up they would have become aware, as you do, that maybe it wasn't quite the most mature game to play. By which time they would have met Tom, and from his example they would have become guardians of the birds. In Coot Club; remember that children are natural joiners, and that they love to learn from older children, and to get organised.

I reckon AR got that exactly right.
