That little section always struck me as "cute"; something AR usually doesn't go in for, but it does serve the purpose of imbuing a teeny bit of happy suspense, and it also is one of the few times they are together as a family--quite nice how sweet they are with Bridget. I don't believe she is adopted; I think she has simply spent much more time with "Nurse" than with the older children, so they really don't know her the way we poorer folk knew our siblings from the day they were born. I assume she was tidied out of sight a lot of the time. I agree that birthdays were probably less of a big deal at that time, and I also think it may have been less the norm for siblings to gift one another. Seems to me that the one or two birthday gifts probably came from parents, with money from relatives, if they had any to give.
