I think we probably need to differentiate between what was known in the 1930's and what is known now.
However it is not only dust, spiders, amoeba... that inhabit loft tanks but also dead pigeons, mice and maybe rats.
Didn't Nancy say one of the pigeons had gone missing?
I think it was only in the 1960's that legislation was introduced in the UK about covering water tanks in the loft.
My wife, who has various gardening quailifications, uses either rainwater or carbon filtered mains tap water for cut flowers. Water should be changed everyday.
Apparently rose stems should be crushed before placing in a vase. Some people add copper coins, asprin or sugar to prolong cut flowere life.
