One of my 'reasons for loving PP' is the development of Titty. We see her having difficulties with the dowsing, but facing her fears at last and saving the day. Further, in the fire scene, she first dithers about as many of us might do (get water, save the hedgepig, take down the tents), yet eventually does just the right thing by sending Sappho off with her message. And what a message! AR, as a journalist, had been trained in getting the point across in the least number of words, and FIRE HELP QUICK is about as least as one can get. The unreliability of Sappho adds to our concern- will the word get out in time?
