Like you Ed I learned a great deal from AR, I expanded my English
vocabulary thanks to the S&A series. In the pages of SA and SD he
taught me sail and John demonstrated the danger of uncontrolled gybes.
I then polished my skills and learned what it meant to 'mouse sister-
hooks' with Knight's Sailing as used by John and Dick. Nancy taught
me not to take "no" for an answer and to find workarounds whenever
I found the way ahead blocked by the dictats of arbitrary authority.
Dorothea showed me that brainpower can prevail against might and evil.
Titty demonstrated that there are powers that can't be explained by
science. Dick got me interested in Chemistry, Slater Bob and Squashy
Hat in mining...

AR's books are full of advice on how to, and how it works and if we
occasionally use the skills he taught us to try to work out how Beckfoot
works and relates to the world of the 1930s then we are simply following
in the footsteps of AR.

Jibbooms and bobstays! We've only got four hours left..."

...rather puts paid to the bowl of hot water theory ;-)
