Not really, after the first year of boarding I enjoyed it. I suspect my school and many others may have been somewhat similar to Rugby when AR was there. It was only in the 1970's that schools at last realised that they no longer needed to produce people to run a long gone empire.

Birthdays were not really celebrated under the "No conspicuous displays of wealth" rule. Some of the foreign princes and others in the boarding house were seriously wealthy. But we still all operated under the same weekly pocket money cap.
However when a prince ran out of money he would ring up his embassy and get someone sent down with cash. But it was done discreetly and money was never flashed around by those who had it.
