Coming across the name 'Sappho' for a child's pet made me realize just how much things have changed in the last 60-70 years.
I wonder. Just as I wonder about Titty's familiarity with 'On looking into Chapman's Homer' Did 9 year olds really know such things in 1930?
However what is undeniable is that at least one 9 year old in the late 1940s knew - me - and all because I read these things in AR and then looked them up. Likewise the Masefield quotations in SA and SD.
I do hope young readers still do this.
