Sorry to be a pedant, but it looks to me that the type itself is the same, but the lines are squeezed closer together by reducing the white space between. Also the 'front matter' is squeezed into fewer pages.
Going into "super pedant mode", I have now measured the type height with elctronic digital callipers. Testing my PM version 1944 against my WH version 1942 shows the the type height is slightly smaller in PM.
However you are correct that the space between the lines is also reducecd, this will contribute probably more to the space saving.
It may be significant that WH was printed by J & J Grey of Edinburgh whilst PM was printed by the Alden Press in Oxford. ISTR that AR lost some drawings when the printers were bombed. Was This J&J Grey?
