Somewhere down in the depths of this Forum, the question was raised as to whether Beckfoot had more than one boathouse. The general conclusion was that there was only one.

However there are references to BOATHOUSES (Plural).

I did a scan of the five LAKE books, and found these references to "boathouses" with the conclusion that due to the density of housing in the Rio area, where each may have had its own boathouse, there would be seen a series of these buildings in the Rio area, and even on the large island in Rio bay (see SACH8). The boatbuilder's series of buildings also seemed to have multiple boathouses (see SDCH8 and WHCH7).

But none of these seem to be referencing any multiple boathouses associated with Beckfoot.

The Swallow ran on. There were now more houses on the eastern shore of the lake. The further they went, the more houses there were. There were islands. One big one had houses on it. A long sandy spit ran out with boathouses on its further side. The houses, no longer scattered among trees, clustered on the side of the hill above the little town of Rio, inhabited entirely by natives who had no idea that this was its name. The Swallow ran on in sheltered water beyond the outer islands and the spit of land. Now they could see Rio Bay and the steamer pier. They were slipping slowly through a fleet of yachts at their moorings. Motor boats were moving about with cargoes of visitors. Captain John sent the Boy Roger forward, to the boy's delight, as a look-out man, and himself was kept very busy avoiding the rowing boats and canoes. Rio on this summer day was a busy place.

----------
The boathouses and sheds cut off a good deal of what wind there was in the bay, and Captain Flint rowed on ahead of Swallow, looking in between the little wooden jetties, to most of which motor boats or yachts were tied up. He was looking for the best place to bring a wounded ship ashore. He found what he wanted and called out as Swallow came nearer, "Bring her in here, Skipper."

WHCH7.doc
----------
A narrow ribbon of thin ice stretched round the promontory and all along by the boathouses and building sheds into Rio Bay. Looking across the channel towards Long Island, they could see that it too had a fringe of ice. By the steamer pier in the bay there were a crowd of people.

So it looks like the group's conclusion of ONE boathouse at Beckfoot still holds up.

Now to go fix the hole in the wall... (Suggested by John Nichols and his sermon for the day.)

And Peter H, thanks for watching and pointing out the waggle in my wake.
