I wonder if there is a technological issue here? In former times, engravers had to be expert at engraving things in mirror style so that when the plate was used for printing, things looked correct withthe writing the correct way etc.
I have no idea how Ransome's drawings went from brain to paper to plate, perhaps someone with a greater knowledge of the printing process can help.
