Let's assume that the Peter Owen Jones painting is accurate wrt. the SE side of the station
at least. It shows a glazed hipped roof over the Windermere track. In the financially
straitened times of the 1930s this could have been cut back to a gabled roof leaving a
surplus piece of wall on the SE corner. AR's drawing would then accurately depict a
locomotive that had just brought in a train from Winderemere (as per the POJ painting)
before it had run around its train. The added fells would be a bit of poetic licence.
