I think that the wall in the SE corner is the wrong wall! AR's wall has a railway track
between it and the platform. I think that the wall is in the NW corner. Here a modern
picture
shows a gabled end to the N end of the overall roof over the Windermere track.
Victorian railway architects had a fine eye for detail and it's fair to assume that the roof
originally had, or was intended to have, a hipped extension identical to the S end. The
removal of this hipped extension leads to the short section of wall sticking out.

This analysis brings us back to Peter's original theory - a mirror image of a engine facing
Winderemere in the bay platform (NW corner of station) with the fells added.
