While there is absolutely no doubt in my mind, as a regular user of Oxenholme/Strickland Junction, that the engine is facing south, two points occur: it isn't really a bay platform, as you say there is a junction off the main line south of the station which creates what is simply the third through platform, used by Windermere trains which still occasionally carry on southwards to Preston (and vice versa).

The hills in the background of Letting Fly are not right for either East or West: the station is effectively carved out of a hillside rising eastwards to the ridge encompassing The Helm so you do not get a horizon looking that way unless you raise your eyes high. Looking westwards, Scoutscar in real life is 3 or 4 miles away whereas the hills in the drawing appear much closer. I think the hills are fairly basic lines added in to simply set the scene.
