Sorry to start a new thread on an existing topic, but it was getting somewhat extended. I popped out to Oxenholme today to get tickets for Alasdair to go back to Uni, and took photos of the South West corner of the side wall,

the North West corner, (and with a new Class 185 dmu pulling in)

but also the North East end of the main station building, which hasn't been mentionned before

So I think AR got it right and we've been wrong.

Why? because until the electrification programme in the 1960's, the west platform serving both the Windermere branch and the mainline to the north was much shorter, and there was a complex arrangements of points just north of the platform allowing Windermere trains to stop at the mainline platform THEN turn off to Windermere (and vice versa onto the south heading side). In fact the Lakes Express would drop through coaches to Windermere here which could then just be pulled forward on to Windermere. Here is a photo of this arrangement at the North end with an LNWR Windermere train coming onto the mainline in 1900 (but it stayed the same till the 1960's) Courtesy of the John Marsh and John Garbutt book on Cumbrian Railways.

In this scenario, the through train with Roger and Titty stopped at the mainline platform not the Windermere branch side, and the stone wall in the background is across the two main lines, and forms the North East end of the row of station buildings - I think it is actually the Ladies toilet. I suspect this arrangement would be the normal practice, with the branch platform face used only by branch line trains. The background fells fit better in this scenario too.

So, no mirror image.
