OK. I've wavered a bit, but now I think I'll settle for Peter's theory.
Those stone blocks that can be seen under the boiler are part of the
same wall that runs on up above the engine. If the engine is on the
mainline road facing Windermere then Bob Boden's photos confirm
that we would expect to see the brickwork of the London platform
edge, not the stone blocks of the wall.
