Actually, that method of depicting birds is hardly unique to the Swallow pennant; Audubon frequently painted birds in that configuration as it enabled him to depict the wing markings, albeit with the bird in an unnatural pose. And, while I can't swear to it, it also makes me think of some Japanese scroll paintings.
