Probably were; the Noyes Children's Library in Kensington had (at least as late as the '90s) several of the earlier editions, not on the shelves but behind the scenes; I was able to get a good look at an old American edition SD there.

My parents bought us the Lippincott SA, and the Macmillan GN in the '50s; others we had to borrow from the West Chester (PA) Public Library, where they, too, were not on the main shelves; we had to get the librarian to open up the balcony for us. We only managed to read the entire series after my mother ordered the JC editions (to be doled out on birthdays and other special occasions) from the British Book Service.
