Robert, in one sense the mountains can have been said to have changed -- but they changed
since Ransome's time and have mostly changed back again. I'm referring to the informational
bulletins one can see at the museums, etc. about the effects of over-touristing on the area
and the efforts since the declaration as a National Park to restore the original conditions of
the fells, walks, etc. Some of the "before, then, and after" photographs are fairly amazing
in terms of how the overload of humanity was wearing the fells, the walks, and the inhabitants
down to nothing but scrubby dirt, and how well the husbandry has worked to bring things back.

Having said that I too would recommend to Ed that he visit the Lake District (I haven't yet been to
the Broads so haven't an opinion). Windermere tends to be a bit on the touristy side, but I've
heard comments to the effect that when they set the controls on the lakes "they had to leave one
for the tourists to ruin". (The conversation was on motor boats, jet skis and water skiers, who were
ruining a Sunday morning by roaring about at about 7:30 in the morning, and also referred to the
condition of the water and the lake life.) But the other lakes, including Coniston, seem to be in
fairly good condition.

One interesting thing is that nowhere are things overdone the way they might have been had the Lake District
been in the U.S. (Not that the British don't go over the top -- I've driven out to Land's End, and left
sadder but no wiser, without entering the awful amusement park and whatever covering the entire end bit.)
