A slightly tongue in cheek response. Most of us remember the line (Churchill's, I think) that someone who is not a socialist when they are 20 has no heart and who is still a socialist when he is 40 has no brain (or words to that effect).

One of the views of AR is that he always displayed a less than adult approach to life. Not irresponsible, but somewhat childish or child-like. I wonder if his socialism, insofar as it existed and continued, can be attributed in part to that continuing childishness.

In that vein, it is clear that the Bolshevik leaders of 1917 made a huge impression on AR - it is not unusual for our childhood heroes to retain a special halo that the fallen heroes of our adult life lose cery rapidly once their feet of clay are revealed...
