I don't know about population declining--very possibly, considering that they require wild spaces without regular incursions of humans--but they have never been one of the birds you always see here. We are further south. Maybe we are on the edge of their range. And we do see them in town around our rivers and lakes; it's just that we're a whole lot more likely to see hundreds of mallards & a few coots....
