In one way, Ed, you're right: we no longer have steam trains, telegrams,
pounds shillings and pence, and other features of the 'furniture' of
the S&A series. Nor thank heavens are children nowadays allowed
to mess about in boats without lifejackets. However, if you came to our
misty shores you would, I'm sure, find that there are places where 'Now'
suddenly and magically becomes 'Then'. For me those places include:

1. The secret harbour on Peel Island (though I'm not sure what your
chances are nowadays of seeing a Dipper!)

2. The cabin of the Nancy Blackett (sit at the table at which he wrote
much of We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea and glance up to see the
porthole through which the younger Walker children first glimpsed
Flushing).

3. Secret Water (this was my own first 'Ransome pilgrimage' many years
ago).

Are you tempted? I hope so!
