Quite agree, Peter. But people seem to believe that chance is cumulative - if there's a one in 1,000 probability of winning the lottery then if they repeat enough their chances improve, which is nonsense - the probability is 1:1000 each time. I guess that must be "common sense", and it certainly is the case that people are far more likely to respond to anecdotes than statistical evidence. Dick would certainly have known better.
