Peter's nihilistic comment set off a train of connections in my mind. The first was to WDMTGTS, Ch. XII 'A Cure for Sea-Sickness', when John's hands "shook a little in spite of nothing having happened" - wonderful line!

Then I somehow recalled the "bogus wherryman" of TarBoard. You have to be a real old-timer to remember that (April-May 1999, in case you feel like entering your Archive Vault and reliving it). It doesn't seem like 9 years ago . . .

While I was down in my Vault, I found this:
