Oh, Edwin, it's worth the visit. We visited the Broads in April in a flying visit to the UK. I was afraid of being disappointed by my first Ransome pilgrimage but it was far better than I'd feared. Horning and Wroxham riversides are overdeveloped (no sign of Tom Dudgeon's dyke) but away from the villages it is utterly beautiful, golden reeds and birds galore. We had a two hour landlubber's sail in a Hunter's Yard 30s wooden boat (bliss), and a day being (polite) Hullabaloos in a motor boat hired from Wroxham. Even in the horrible, noisy, smelly, unsteerable motor boat we had a good time. I was picking out landmarks from Coot Club as we went along, the text and the experience ran together at times. April was the right time to go, we were the only day boat hirers on the river and birds were nesting everywhere. Just don't eat at the Ferry Inn. We're taking sailing lessons and plotting.
