Sorry, Anne, more trashing. I go along with Alan Hakim. The point about academics decreeing that AR is a 'feminist author' is that academics teach others, and so the whole socio-political and resentful agenda which has been forced onto the Ransome matrix is then foisted onto students. The Kazumi Kubo case is a perfect example. KK, a female student at a university in Alberta, was asked by her professor to make a class presentation on SA, its symbolism and its feminism. She was baffled by this and appealed to TARS for help. We gave her some. In fact we gave her enough ammo to blow her professor out of the water, which she duly did. For details see Mixed Moss Vol 2 No 3 (1996) p 47, and in particular see what Taqui Altounyan and Brigit Sanders had to say.
In a later Mixed Moss (Vol 3 No 2 - Autumn 1997) is a perfect example of what happens when you try to apply half-baked 'gender' theories to Ransome. In 'AR and the Question of Gender' Peter & Sarah Hunt come up with such gems as 'Nancy Blackett and Jo March are brothers under the skin', 'Titty is eccentric' and the ultimate absurdity 'The G-A throws overboard Timothy's female cargo'. The last had me rolling with laughter. I think the article must surely have been a spoof, in which case it certainly makes its point.
