Can't now find the posting that first refers to "brothers under the skin" so I apologise for adding this note in the wrong place. The reference is of course to Kipling:
"The Colonel's lady and July O'Grady are sisters under the skin" - a very radical notion for the times. It was published in a collection "The Ladies", 1896, at the end of a period in which Kipling had been living near Vermont. I don't think the line was meant to be complimentary to women.
