sea shanties and all. The BBC used to do radio drama extremely well.

In some cases they still do. It's all a question of being serious about it, of spending proper money on hiring good writers and producers. That was, and I think still is, a tradition in the BBC, and in spite of the tightness of the money nowadays, traditions do endure beyond reason.
