There seem to be a few hints of the "tribal" plot left in SD. After the Swalllows set up their camp (beginning of Chapt 14) it says:

"There were some minutes that day when it was almost settled that until Swallow came back mended, her captain and crew would not go on being shipwrecked sailors, but would be a savage tribe instead, cave-dwellers, dancing at night round their fires, setting up totems on long poles and worshippping them with wreaths of heather."

But that would have been rather out of character with the Swallows (especially John who wants to make up for his blunder) and it fits much better with landscape and scenery of SW, too. (And even then the Swallows are so focussed on their map that they are quite reluctant to make war on the savages)

And of course there's the chapter with Titty's Voodoo ritual (chpt. 18 "Candle-grease)

Also maybe a few more little things, like the Amazons thinking of the G.A. as a "heathen goddess".
