In SA Ransome refers to them as "bows": "Then, inside their own tents, they saw two figures, kneeling, one with a bow ready to shoot, the other fitting an arrow." And a couple of pages later, "The Amazons put their bows on the ground."
In SD however "John saw she had a crossbow in her hand" and "In a moment she had pushed her crossbow out of sight, under a seat in the steerage".
If they had been using crossbows in SA I think Ransome would have called them crossbows.
