Because children love them, and he was writing for them?
Think of tree houses, blankets-and-two-chairs houses, hiding in the wardrobe amid your parents' coats, spending all day in the fork of a big tree, looking down at the world... I know I loved all of those when I was small.
I think it's atavism.
