Wild Cat Island is special among the sanctuaries in that, after the first book, it is a paradise often aimed at but never properly regained in direct narration.
In SD the Swallows spend one night there, and in WH the Swallows and Amazons land there but spend no time. SD, PP and PM all end just as they are about to return.
The prosaic reason for this is probably just that AR had run out of ideas for adventures they could have while based there, but this pattern does give the place an additional magic for the reader.
